The History of Hamlin Plantation in Mount Pleasant, SC

Some neighborhoods have a name for a reason — and in Hamlin Plantation, that reason goes back more than 300 years.

If you’re exploring homes in North Mount Pleasant, chances are Hamlin Plantation is already on your radar. It’s consistently one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the area — and once you understand the history behind the name, it’s easy to see why this community feels different from the moment you arrive. The land itself has a story worth knowing.

The Hamlin Name Traces Back to 1696

The story begins with a colonial-era planter named Thomas Hamlin, who established Copahee Plantation on this land in 1696. The plantation sat within Christ Church Parish — one of ten parishes created by South Carolina’s Church Act of 1706, which also functioned as a civil administrative district for all the land in what is now North Mount Pleasant.

Copahee Plantation was later divided into two tracts — Copahee and Contentment Cottage — and the broader area eventually became known as Hamlin Farms. According to local historian Elizabeth Hamlin “Liz” McConnell, a formal community had taken shape by 1701. The Hamlin family’s presence left a lasting mark on the landscape, including Cook’s Old Field Cemetery, founded by the Hamlin, Hibben, and Leland families before the Revolutionary War. That cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as the final resting place of James Hibben — one of the founders of the town of Mount Pleasant itself.

A Community Built on Deep Family Ties

One of the most meaningful chapters in Hamlin’s history came in 1881, sixteen years after the Civil War ended. According to both the Mount Pleasant Historical Commission and Mount Pleasant Magazine, African American farmers purchased 31 ten-acre lots from the Hamlin family, founding the Hamlin Beach community between Copahee Sound and Boone Hall Plantation. It was an act of land ownership that anchored generations of Black families to this stretch of the Lowcountry — and descendants of those original residents still live in the area today.

From Rural Farmland to a Master-Planned Neighborhood

For generations, the Hamlin area was a close-knit rural farming community.  That rural character began to change in the late 20th century as Mount Pleasant’s growth pushed northward. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 was a turning point of sorts — city water arrived in the aftermath — and development pressure followed steadily through the 1990s.

The Hamlin Plantation subdivision was developed beginning in the late 1990s and through the 2000s. The Sintra Corporation and John Wieland Homes were among the primary builders who shaped the community, contributing homes across several distinct subsections: The Sound, The Village, Waverly, Madison, and One Hamlin Place. The master plan was thoughtfully designed — each subsection has a park within walking distance, miles of sidewalks and walking trails connect the neighborhood, and the natural surroundings of Hamlin Sound, tidal marshes, and grand live oaks were preserved as defining features rather than cleared away.

What Makes Hamlin Plantation Special Today

The Hamlin Plantation of today reflects both its history and its thoughtful design. The neighborhood offers over 800 homes and townhomes, resort-style amenities including a junior Olympic swimming pool, tennis courts, a fitness center, and a clubhouse. Buyers can choose from townhomes to large custom-built single-family homes — all with architecture rooted in classic Lowcountry style: double porches, elevated construction, and the kind of curb appeal that feels genuinely at home in coastal South Carolina.

It’s all situated on land that has carried the Hamlin name for more than three centuries. That’s not something you find just anywhere.
